Dave Martsolf studied Architecture at M.I.T. and Fine Arts at the University of New Hampshire. Dave's focus has been in visual arts ever since he can remember. His style remains surrealistic in its general theme, though the means to the end has been a long walk-about through the mediums of raw physical media, such as oils, watercolors, and pencils, to the more technically-oriented media of computer-based art.

As Dave is aware that this web site is very much oriented toward computer graphics, he notes that he did do a spurt of dabbling in the early tools of Bryce, Poser, Kai's Power Tools, and similar photo editing and photo manipulation products. He was owner and artistic director of Damsel Software Group from its inception to its demise as a producer of original content screen savers in the heady days of early CG when people would actually pay for such a product.

Today, Dave has returned to handmade art, all the while wondering if there is still a place for it in this world. He continues to believe that art can be a vehicle to communicate visceral yet at the same time cerebral thoughts and feelings in a single still image that can transport the observer to a dream reality that can be totally absorbing and alive with all manner of doorways to emotions and experiences never before realized. Difficult task? Yes, but rewarding once the view has been attained.

In future months Dave will be adding continuously to his watercolor pieces, including a new series of realistic pieces based on his wife Emma. He is aIso still thinking of grander spin-offs into oils once again for the first time since the 1970’s and 80’s when all of his major surrealist pieces were created. Dave says, "I never could find a gallery or interest in these pieces then, but perhaps in a future age they will come to have some value. In any case, by not selling I have been able to keep my output uncluttered by the draw of money or the influence of clients. While I love people, clients are scarier to me than a sheet of white paper, which as all artists know is about the scariest thing there is. Still, I am available for whatever it is that I seem to be doing and hope to be more available in the future." So now, back to business and great art to come.

Surrealism as an intellectual style, but achieving it through a wide variety of traditional painterly techniques including realism, abstraction, abstract expressionism, and a new style where a flowing line is then interpreted into 3-dimensional shapes by the mind's eye and color-shaded to achieve both surface and volumetric effects.

Original fine art pieces, Screen savers, Photography, Photo Manipulation

(Cringe) Paint Brushes, Drawing Tools, Pencils, Pens, All Kinds of Paper, Oils, Watercolors, Adobe Photoshop (finally, a computer tool). I used Photomatix for a while to do HDR manipulation, but tired of it rather quickly. You see, for me, my guts don't get involved until my brush is in my hand and like mountain climbing, once false step and you are a dead man. I like a lot of natural light as well. The sun! Now, there's an app!

Simon Schama's "Power of Art" BBC videos are worth looking at. Of course, Schama only profiles famous artists who had tragic lives in one way or another. But, you do learn a lot, and finding out these things really juices up your motivation to do what you do and do it until you bleed out your life. It's a bit melodramatic at times, but it does pump you up.

Sorry, not yet. I'm still breathing.
