The objective of this project was to research a building (Chamberlain Cottage in Wayland, MA) and its architect (Marcel Breuer) by focusing on style, historical context, precedents and materials. After researching the building, I designed a volumetic extension of the original structure. I chose to construct a free standing live/work addition that extended the structure, enclosure and form of circulation into the landscape.
The existing structure acts as a puzzle piece, so while designing a free-standing addition, I focused on a shape that would fit into the existing, but become pulled apart. I wanted this new puzzle piece to be seperate from the original builing. By twisiting a portion of the addition and raiting it, I showed its importance.
