With design week hitting Los Angeles this week, I thought it would be nice to Blog, Facebook and Twitter about the different events going on in our global art and design world. If you saw the FF facebook page, you already know about Black & White Are Not Colors, happing at Festival Breda, The Hague. But, if you are in London, treat yourself to TYPO, at least sign-up for the free ticket giveaway. ~MAC

Design's biggest names come to London this week
- and you can be there for free

This Thursday, Friday and Saturday (October 20-22) typography's biggest names descend on the University of London for TYPO London – an event bringing together the world's leading designers for a series of what are sure to be inspirational and informative talks on type, graphic and digital design, brand experience, film, animation, publishing and education.

TYPO London is based on the hugely successful TYPO Berlin – and returns to London, the city where it all began.

Amongst the highlights are Tony Brook exploring the work of a generation of designers from north of the Watford Gap; Jason Smith on making typefaces with personalities; Chip Kidd on the commission of a lifetime; and Bruno Maag on how to collaborate with clients. There's also a king speaking (really!). King Bansah – king of Hohoe Ghana – will discuss, along with Julian Zimmermann – how to develop an image profile for a real king. Sounds interesting.

To celebrate the event – which should be a cracker – we've teamed up with TYPO London to give away five pairs of tickets for the event – the full three days. Tickets are usually £650+VAT!

To be in with a chance of winning, simply tweet @ComputerArts with the hashtag #TYPOLondonticket. Just click here to do it. You must be able to make your way to London for the event. We'll announce the winners at 4pm today.

See more at www.typolondon.com and all the speakers are here.

While watching the Watchmen I thought about this topic:the art of music, specifically in video game and movie design. The right sound for the right scene, for the right display, for the right exhibition, for the right scene. The first trailer for Watchmen used the moody track below from the Smashing Pumpkins. If you have not seen the movie, go and buy the graphic novel and then watch the film. Trust me. The rest are some of my favorite video game trailers, the music is the @#$%! Enjoy.

The Rise of Printmaking in Southern California (video podcast)

The art world of the late 1950s experienced a groundswell of interest in printmaking that forever changed the artistic landscape of America. By that time, the most avant-garde of artists had become interested in making editioned works on paper with a press, using methods no longer relegated to a select group who defined themselves solely as “printmakers.” Because this development was still in its germinal stages in the 1950s, however, there existed only a handful of places in the country where eager young artists could learn the techniques of printmaking. Academic institutions tended to favor familiar and conventional intaglio methods, drawing on Rembrandt, Goya and Whistler, art history’s most successful artist-printmakers. Lithography and screenprinting, which suited the growing pop and minimal aesthetic as well as the more painterly approaches of expressionism, were harder for artists to adopt. These methods, traditionally used only for commercial printing, were still in their infancy as fine-art techniques. As a result, they were rarely taught in university art programs, and by the late 1950s, there were only three or four studios in the country that could claim success as fine-art lithography printshops, and even fewer for screenprinting.

Here's a little mental exercise I did when I first saw this young man's work. I asked myself how many green people do I know. Here is what I came up with:

I know at least 3 people who now drive electric vehicles. One who skateboard's to work. One who bikes. One who is planning on buying a golf cart.

Most of my friends (not including the roommate) recycle.

My neighborhood located in the "hipster" part of LA has a 3 TrashMasters that patrol our streets all week long, a green one, a blue one and a black one, I will let you figure out what each one picks up at 7 in the morning. Grrrrr!

which brings me to Andrew Kim's work from Art Center. Among other projects (innovative minimalistic product design) Kim brings us this greener version of our favorite Coke products. He calls it Next Generation, I call it bad ass design.

Hot off the press!

Raimo Nikkanen, VP Cumulus, and Patrick Bradley (FF CEO) talking global design transformation at Denver Art Museum. Cumulus - http://www.cumulusassociation.org/- is the only global association to serve art and design education and research.

-----

What is Cumulus?

Cumulus - International Association of Universities and Colleges of Art, Design and Media

The University of Art and Design in Helsinki (UIAH) (currently Aalto University School of Art and Design) and the Royal College of Art in London, in co-operation with Danmarks Designskole, Gerrit Rietvelt Academy, Universität Gesamthochschule Essen and Hochschule für Angewandte Kunst in Wien initiated the Cumulus Network in 1990.

They all had a common desire to enhance the quality of education through co-operation, student and teacher exchange within the European Union Erasmus programme. The Network was transferred to Cumulus Association in 2001.

Cumulus has been a pioneer in developing jointly organised MA-programmes, intensive workshops, projects and biannual conferences. It has published 'working papers' which have documented the discussions and seminars in conferences, a First Aid Kit to help students and professors in planning mobility actions, kept up a web page, etc. These activities go on.

During the past twenty years Cumulus has grown in size and ambition. The number of members has grown from 6 to 165 (2010). The members represent most of the European countries and during past years several countries overseas have also joined Cumulus. Member universities represent now 43 different countries. The aim is to build and keep on going a dynamic and flexible academic forum that would bring together top level educational institutions from all parts of the world.

Here in the states we seldom get exposed to the cornucopia of persuasive creative that daily tries to convince people like you and me in other countries to buy, sell, consume, entertain, drink, lie to our girlfriends (this usually goes hand in hand with the drinking ads,) drive faster, loose weight, live healthier or trade stock. Yes, the elements are all the same, but the delivery is usually a little different. Let's see what these modern day "Mad Men" are dishing out these days to our global friends using photography, video, animation, & 3D.

1) China: Bailing Fast Onset Cough Syrup

With the caption "Don't make slight cough give rise to big trouble" Invisible Advertising in China produced these whimsical illustrations titled "Cannibal" and "Thief."

2) Russia: Chery Bonus

Chery International, a 5 year old auto company based in China is rolling out its new Chery Bonus in Russia. This English version, targeted at men, takes a whimsical approach by pointing out a few of our... shortcomings.

3) Philippines: World Wildlife Foundation

Captioned "70% of plastic ends up in the sea" and using underwater photographer Neil Oshima's amazing deep sea work, WWF uses the classic approach: a picture is work a thousand words.

4) Poland: APAP

McCann Erickson's Warsaw branch created these hand-drawn pieces for APAP. Do you think they are fans of Emily Hubley's work?

5) Brazil: Rubbermaid

Illustrated food has always been fun. Remember the Dancing Raisins back in the 80s?
And do not these ads remind you a bit of Pepe Le'Pew... no?

6) Afrika: Mozambique Music Awards

"Some songs get stuck in the head, while others are stuck in the blood. Mozambique Music Awards. It's our music. It's our culture." Some art is just good for all the right reasons.

7) France: CANAL+ Borgia: Rodrigo

You must be living under the proverbial rock if you have not been exposed to at least one of the campaigns for this series about to return for a second season. Canal+ France combines the photos from "flamboyant photographer" David Lachapelle with the talented designers at BETC Euro RSCG, France to give us these "revealing" prints.

8) Australia & NZ: Bundaberg Five

Ever wake up next to a stranger? Even stranger, ever wake up next to 2 dolphins? The following print ads title "Raw like the sashimi of rum" and "Filtered once for every finger you got" respectively, give a whole new meaning to Goodtime Charlie.

9) Argentina: Andes Beer

Argentina, famous for their sultry Tango and savory bovine delicacies also posses the flair for the dramatic. Everyone has a story to tell and many can tell a good story. It's no wonder that Andes Beer pushes the envelope with their television commercials and publicity stunts. Here's a couple with sub-titles:

Young & Rubicam, Mexico uses classic particle effects for this explosive ad that was so well done it went right into my computer wallpaper auto-rotation. I also gave you a little Alex Viveros to end this blog entry since he will be featured as one of the artist in the 2nd issue of SPARK! (Friday) for his amazing work with illustration.
