A product of 35 years of work and over 100,000 toothpicks, the piece can be explored via a number of ball runs that take you through toothpick replicas of Bay Area sights and attractions. Pretty cool!

Graphic Design can change your life

Erik Spiekermann, founder and partner of Edenspiekermann AG received the German Design Prize 2011 for Lifetime Achievements from Andrej Kupetz CEO, Rat für Formgebung. Congratulations Erik!

The Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany is the country’s highest distinction in the field of design. It is known as the “Prize of Prizes”. The reason: no other design award sets such strict criteria on entries.

A great use of underwater photography, coupled with a nice little story twist at the end.

Creative Pro talks-up Filter Foundry

The team at Creative Pro gave FF some love this week.

Here's what they had to say.

Via Adweek.

It's Super Bowl time again, so why not take a look at arguably the most famous Super Bowl ad ever?

Steve Hayden was a senior VP and creative director at the agency that came up with the spot. This is the story of how the spot got made.

Two points of interest from the article:

- The board hated it, but left it to Jobs and Apple CEO John Sculley to make the final decision. When Steve Wozniak saw it, he offered to personally pay for half the costs to run it. (Gotta love the Woz)

- Director Ridley ...

Typefaces From 102 Years Ago

I'm both a font nut and a history nut, so this post about typefaces from 1902 is pretty cool.

FTA: "But now I'm reaching a bit farther back--a century back, in fact, to 1909--to see what Section 6, Part 2, of my revered Volume 204 of the International Correspondence School Reference Library calls "the best advertising, catalog, booklet, and folder types." Even if I had revivals in mind, I'd be out of luck; most of these faces never made the transition from metal to digital. The turn of the 20th century was the beginning of a golden ...

"English photographer Carl Warner is the perfect example of a creative person. This guy thought of building full landscapes with food, and it just looks absolutely amazing. It's total eye-candy and of course, makes you hungry."

The new site is described as "Facebook for creatives" and includes functionality similar to LinkedIn and Twitter that's geared to boosting design careers.

The goal of the site is to help creative individuals or firms showcase and market their products and services, find work, hire collaborators, learn or teach techniques, and buy digital products from the marketplace. Harald Bellker on Filter Foundry

At 48, Harald Belker has been involved in the design field for roughly 20 years. “I started dreaming about car design pretty late. I was about 26 and finished a degree in engineering before I even heard of the Art Center College of Design”, he admits. “But once I saw what they did, I was pretty sure that this would be my future as well.”

After graduating from the Art Center College of Design, Belker fell into the dream design job of designing cars for Porsche. From Porsche, Belker then moved to another iconic automotive company at Mercedes Benz in ...

When one looks at Neville Page’s background and family, it really is no surprise that he would be involved in some form of creativity. His parents met in the theatre in Great Britain, his mother a dancer and father a musician. They eventually joined the circus, where his father played in the band and mother found herself atop an elephant waving at the crowd in a feathery outfit. You could say that when Neville was an infant he was not without colourful exposure.

When his family moved to the U.S.A. in 1970, the “showbiz” mentality followed them ...
